Deadwood is a key feature of old-growth forests and is important for supporting a wide range of biota. This large Balsam Poplar (Populus balsamifera) log was situated in an old eastern hardwood forest on Whitemouth Island Ecological Reserve, in southeastern Manitoba. This log had an abundant growth of several leafy liverworts, including the first record of Drummond's Flapwort (Harpanthus drummondii) for Manitoba.
